On Wednesday, I was announced as the recipient of the 2023 Shelley Simpson Ceramics Prize. I have had to take a bit of time to process it, firstly, because I truly didn’t expect to win it, and secondly, because a prize of this nature – $10,000 and a mentorship – is a huge milestone and game changer for my little ceramics practice.

My wheel is 30 years old, the pedal sticks, and it’s louder than a freight train transporting howler monkeys. She has served me well, but I’ve wanted an upgrade for a very long time. This prize allows me to do that. There are masterclasses, workshops and conferences with esteemed ceramicists I look up to that I’ve always wanted to attend. This prize allows me to do that. I’d like new shelves, a proper camera for product photography and one of those fancy Giffin Grips. This prize allows me to do that. It is not lost on me how generous this prize is and the opportunities it opens up for me.

Thank you to Shelley Simpson @mudaustralia for selecting me, and for recognising and celebrating my practice. Deeply honoured, deeply grateful.

The latest issue of @artichoke_magazine has starte

The latest issue of @artichoke_magazine has started hitting mailboxes! I’m pretty proud of this one - a special issue, guest edited with @pascalegomesmcnabbdesign , which highlights the extraordinary emerging design talent in this country.

From my editor’s letter:

“This special issue, guest edited with designer Pascale Gomes-McNabb, is focused on Australia’s talented emerging designers, and it’s been a long time coming.

Years ago, I noticed more emerging studios popping up – individuals who had taken a punt and broken away from medium and large firms to set up solo or small practices. They were producing exciting work, untethered by traditions, styles or legacies. These young individuals were not just designers and architects – they were researchers, artists, educators, environmentalists and social enablers. They were using their design credentials to solve longstanding problems – create furniture from waste, design spaces for social inclusion and use new technologies to share knowledge. It was time to dedicate an entire issue to these rising stars – Australia’s most promising and original talents working in furniture, object, interiors and architecture.

I wanted to work with a guest editor who had an instinct for talent, could understand the practical predicaments early-career designers face and was a role model for this generation. Working with Pascale to compile this issue has been a delight. Together, we searched for emerging designers who went beyond the demands of the brief and were concerned with social, environmental and educational obligations. I thank Pascale for her impeccable eye for talent, and for her late-night uplifting DMs.

Artichoke has always championed the work of the rising talents of the time – we have published the first projects of many designers who have gone on to have long, award-winning careers. It’s an honour to continue this practice and dedicate an entire issue to Australia’s emerging designers.”

This show explores the relationship between tension and relaxation, and there’s more than 80 artworks to check out. My new exhibition, Sitting Vacant, opens @stockroomkyneton this afternoon! I’m currently in iso with Covid, so “sitting vacant” seems veerrrrryyyy ironic right now. If you’re around, head over to the opening from 4.30pm today (Saturday), grab a wine and check it out. Bummed to be missing it!

This new work continues my exploration of ancient clay tablets, as well as architectural site plans and design material palettes. The exhibition includes four wall-hung pieces and a series of sculptures and vases in terracotta, rich midfire red and black clay.

My new exhibition “Scale and Assembly” opens @moderntimesau today! 🫣🥳

This is a new series of work for me, inspired by an image I found online of a 5000-year-old clay tablet from ancient Mesopotamia that features floor plans of a house. My tablets can be read as site plans (albeit kooky ones) or as material palettes - choose your own adventure! Check them out at the link in bio.
